Your Guide to Celebrating Carnival in Chicago

Carnival in Chicago runs for one weekend in early March. You pick a neighborhood, check the weather, and head out. Here is how to do it without extra hassle.

When to Show Up

Most events happen Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. The main parade starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday along Halsted Street in Pilsen.

  • Friday: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Wicker Park block party
  • Saturday: 11 a.m. parade, then street fair until 8 p.m.
  • Sunday: Family day at Humboldt Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where to Spend Your Time

Stay in one area rather than bouncing between events. Pilsen gives you the parade and food stalls in one spot. Humboldt Park works if you want music stages and space to sit.

Area Best for Nearest train stop
Pilsen Parade and food 18th Street Pink Line
Wicker Park Night parties Damen Blue Line
Humboldt Park Daytime stages California Green Line

Prepare in Three Steps

  1. Check the forecast the night before and bring a light jacket even if it looks warm.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes. You will walk at least two miles between the train and the floats.
  3. Carry cash for food trucks. Most vendors do not take cards during the crowds.

What Locals Actually Do

People line up early for tamales from the stands on 18th Street. After the parade they move to the beer garden near the park field house. If you want photos of the floats, stand on the east side of Halsted before 10:30 a.m. The light stays better there.

Many families bring folding chairs for the Sunday event. They claim spots near the main stage by 9:30 a.m. and stay put until the last band finishes.
